In the state of South Dakota, jobs are readily available, and the state's small size ensures it's easy to collaborate with a variety of companies. Agriculture is the largest industry in the state, contributing more than $20.7 billion to the local economy, and because around 98 percent of South Dakota's farms are owned by families, a lot of the money is kept in the local economy and circulated.
South Dakota has a surprisingly large biomedical industry, with Sanford Health and Avera Health employing approximately 18,000 people in Sioux Falls alone. It is one of the key areas that the state hopes to expand, and with agriculture being a major focus in the state, fuels and seed engineering are among its top priorities. This also extends to education, with local universities producing a large number of bioscience and biomedical graduates.
The financial industry is also a major part of South Dakota's economy. Citibank has a presence in the state thanks to various banking regulations, and the state currently holds $3.2 billion in bank assets, which is around a fifth of the total bank assets in the United States. As a result, finance jobs in South Dakota are relatively easy to find, as are jobs in associated security industries.
Ellsworth Air Force Base is the second-largest employer in the state, with a B-1B Lancer wing located there. It is responsible for around 16,000 people in the area, including military retirees. Other possibilities include working for the US Geological Survey monitoring oil and mining operations in the Williston Basin or perhaps working for one of the city governments in a range of roles.
South Dakota oil field jobs are relatively rare, however, and only the Keystone pipeline runs through the state. The highly productive Bakken Shale doesn't extend that far south, so most new wells are being drilled in North Dakota. However, some companies are based in South Dakota, and a large proportion of South Dakotan households use LPG as a main heating source, so gas sales are vital.
South Dakota offers a variety of employment options, from Rapid City in the west to Sioux Falls in the east. Science and federal jobs are particularly well represented across the board.
