The Minnehaha County Juvenile Detention Center is accepting applications for part-time Juvenile Correctional Workers (JCW). JCW's perform entry level professional work in the supervision, care, guidance, and custody of juveniles detained by the courts. The hours for this position vary and may include days, evenings and overnight shifts.
Examples of Duties Include
Supervise children in the Center. Observe behavior of individuals and groups and record pertinent data. Supervise the children's personal hygiene, care of clothing, and table manners. Enforce disciplinary policies of the Center and give personal guidance to help youth reduce anxiety and tension. Plan, organize, and direct daily group educational activities and programs and recreational and leisure time activities. Admit and release youth in and out of detention. Assist in food preparation, kitchen duties, and cleaning of classrooms, showers, and laundry areas. Assist in facility maintenance and operation.
High school diploma or GED. Basic knowledge of the growth, development, needs, and problems of adolescents. Ability to work effectively with juveniles while gaining their confidence and respect. Ability to sense, evaluate, and manage tense group situations as they develop. Ability to understand and follow written directions. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor.
Possession of, or currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, social science, or related field. Experience working in the criminal justice field. Basic knowledge of the growth, development, needs, and problems of adolescents.
